If you have been told that your cortisol levels are high and you're having issues with your blood sugar and your sex hormones you need to stop skipping breakfast! It may seem like no big deal but cortisol peaks in the morning to help you wake up. Skipping breakfast keeps cortisol elevated longer which keeps the body in a stressed state.
Important Facts
Skipping breakfast is strongly associated with higher waist circumference (even in women who don't overeat later!).
No fuel in the morning means your body may redirect resources away from making sex hormones (like estrogen and progesterone) and prioritize making more cortisol. This can worsen PMS, cycle irregularity, low libido, and mood swings.
Cortisol increases anxiety and irritability when it’s not balanced by food.
If your body perceives fasting as stress, it may slow your metabolism even more.
Let's Fix This
Even if you’re not hungry, try a light breakfast with protein + healthy fats. This tells your nervous system you're safe, helps stabilize blood sugar, and supports hormone balance throughout the day.
Eggs and avocado
A protein smoothie
Greek yogurt with nuts
Smoked salmon, avocado & cottage cheese
Mighty Magnesium
I recommend taking 150 of magnesium with breakfast. Seeking Health makes a great supplement called Optimal Magnesium. It's calming but not sedating, so it won't make you sleepy if you take it in the morning. (Always ask your doctor before starting any new supplements).
Taking 150mg of Optimal Magnesium with breakfast can help:
Lower and balance cortisol
Support blood sugar and insulin
Ease PMS and hormone imbalances
Improve stress resilience and mood
If you're doing everything right—eating healthy, exercising, getting enough sleep—and still can't figure out why you're not losing weight, elevated cortisol levels could be the reason. Start eating breakfast within 1–2 hours of waking, and consider adding a quality magnesium supplement. It might just be a game changer for you!
