The 5th Pillar of Health & Wellness is often overlooked when we think about our health. We all focus on our diet and exercise but when it comes to building relationships with amazing women of God, we don't think that has anything to do with our health. There have been many times when life got tough and I needed encouragement and support. I needed to be reminded of Who God is and what He's doing in my life. I needed a perspective shift, wise council, or a shoulder to cry on. Facing situations alone can be extra stressful and loneliness is bad for your health. Having friends and social support improves both your physical and mental health.

Mental Health Benefits

Reduces Stress and Anxiety Talking to a friend or feeling understood can help calm your nervous system, lowering cortisol levels (your body’s main stress hormone). This leads to improved mood and better emotional regulation.

Decreases Risk of Depression People with close social ties are less likely to experience loneliness—a major risk factor for depression. Supportive friends provide encouragement and perspective during difficult times.

Improves Self-Esteem and Confidence Feeling loved and valued by others reinforces your sense of worth and identity. When you're around people who uplift you, you're more likely to believe in yourself and take healthy risks.

Encourages Healthy Behaviors Friends can influence your habits—positively or negatively. Supportive friends often encourage things like exercise, eating well, getting enough sleep, and seeking help when needed.

Physical Health Benefits

Boosts Immune Function Studies show that people with strong social connections tend to have better immune responses. Chronic loneliness and social isolation, on the other hand, can lead to increased inflammation and a weakened immune system.

Improves Heart Health Social support is linked to lower blood pressure, reduced risk of heart disease, and improved heart rate variability—all signs of a healthier cardiovascular system.

Encourages Longevity Research consistently shows that people with meaningful relationships live longer. In fact, social connection is as predictive of longevity as quitting smoking or maintaining a healthy weight.

Supports Better Recovery Whether recovering from surgery, illness, or emotional trauma, people with strong support systems tend to heal faster and experience fewer complications.

For some, putting yourself out there may be out of your comfort zone, but it's worth it! Sign up for a group at your church. Volunteer. Get involved. You need support and someone else needs your support. You are valuable and other women will be blessed by you as much as you're blessed by them!
