A Firm Foundation
When you want to build anything you have to start with the foundation. A strong, sturdy foundation is essential, otherwise whatever you're building can crack or collapse. Your health is the same way. When Jesus is your foundation and you're getting your needs met from Him, then we can talk about how to eat properly, exercise, get plenty of sleep/rest, build community, etc. If you're looking to idols/objects to meet your needs or looking to food, men, drugs, alcohol, or other spiritual practices you're going to come up empty and worse off than before. God is the only one that can fill that void in your heart and soul; that need for love, security, comfort, protection, identity, etc. It all comes from The Lord. When you have a void in you because you're not seeking God to meet your foundational needs then you'll search in unhealthy ways to try to meet those needs.
Psalm 11:3
If the foundations are destroyed, What can the righteous do?
Luke 6:47-49
47 Whoever comes to Me, and hears My sayings and does them, I will show you whom he is like:
48 He is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. And when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently against that house, and could not shake it, for it was founded on the rock.
Food For Comfort
One of the most common ways women look for comfort is in food. Food cannot comfort your hurting heart or soul. It's meant to nourish our bodies and to be enjoyed, but it was never meant to fill a void. If you wonder why you keep going through this cycle of overeating and then regret you're likely looking for food to fill something it can't. It's heartbreaking to see God's daughters struggle with food when the savior is so close. He's ready and waiting to bind up your broken heart.
Psalm 34:18
The Lord is near to those who have a broken heart, And saves such as have a contrite spirit.
Luke 4:18
The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, Because He has anointed Me To preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to the captives And recovery of sight to the blind, To set at liberty those who are oppressed;
Healing
You may not even realize where the hurt is coming from, you just know you need to soothe your heart and feel comfort and happiness for a moment. Eating is a super temporary way to feel happiness that will make you feel worse afterwards if you're using it to comfort your heart/soul. It leads to weight gain and health issues, as well as feelings of regret and self loathing. No amount of food education will fix this if the root cause isn't healed. There is healing in the presence of The Lord. He is a safe place. Bring your heartbreak, pain, disappointments, all of your brokenness; lay it all down at His feet and ask Him to heal you. Walk with Him, stay close to Him. New hurts come, as life is not perfect and people are not perfect. We need Him close to strengthen us and heal us throughout our lives. The beautiful thing is that He wants to! He wants to be close to you and take all of your hurt and pain away.
1 Peter 5:7
casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you.
Psalm 62:8
Trust in Him at all times, you people; Pour out your heart before Him; God is a refuge for us. Selah
Psalm 147:3
He heals the brokenhearted And binds up their wounds.
God is your Husband
Isaiah 54:5 tells us that God is our husband. The love we're looking for, the comfort, the protection, the security, it's all found in Him. You may be married or single, the message is the same, as no man can fill you and meet all and your needs. Men are human. Even the best men make terrible gods. We often look for validation from people and that leaves us empty and hurt. It's like looking for validation from the wind; one minute it's there and the next it's gone. Our identity comes from The Lord who loves us and gave himself for us. When He defines you, you're not swayed by the opinions of others. One day they approve of you and the next they don't. As long as God approves of us, we're good. We know we're doing the right thing. Allow Jesus to lavish His love on you and fill your heart and soul with His presence. In Him we find peace.
Isaiah 54:5
For your Maker is your husband, The Lord of hosts is His name; And your Redeemer is the Holy One of Israel; He is called the God of the whole earth.
Philippians 4:7
and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
Psalm 16:11
You will show me the path of life; In Your presence is fullness of joy; At Your right hand are pleasures forevermore.
